Open Water Rowing in a Stunning Location

Embrace the change of season with this unique wellness adventure! Slow down, tune in and experience the beauty and wonder of this gorgeous marine environment from a trusty and seaworthy wooden dory. Get one with the elements. Commune with wildlife from a front row seat. Marvel at the interplay of light, sea and sky. All skill-levels welcome for this one of a kind, classically Maine experience. Prefer to be a passenger only? That's fine--please note on the booking form. This experience offers an introduction to rowing a fixed seat boat with two oars in open water. We'll row out into bay and/or up the Passagassawakeag River. You'll be guided in basic rowing form and technique. You'll learn about tidal cycles, rowing in a variety of conditions and the basics of navigation in open water. In the spring, rows are often punctuated with sightings of migratory birds, including ospreys, herons, coromorants and ducks. Seals sightings are common, as well as eagles, gulls and other seabirds. You'll learn about the history of Belfast's working waterfront and our heritage of traditional wooden boats. Row a Wooden Boat: Spring is available for 1-3 people, ages 12 and up. Sessions are offered Tues-Saturday in the mornings. Pricing is $95 per person. Looking for more comprehensive instruction? Check out DWR's rowing packages under "Book your Row." Your row begins with a safety talk, reviewing the different parts of the boat, going over rowing commands and getting seated properly and comfortably. Lifejackets (PFDs) are required to be worn on the boat and docks in the spring. DWR will provide these--however, if you have your own PFD, please bring it. Dress appropriately for the weather (translation: layers!). Temps vary this time of year and the wind can be brisk. Wear comfortable synthetic, silk or wool clothing clothing, wind resistant outerwear and footwear appropriate for the conditions. Bring water to stay hydrated. Sunscreen is advised for daytime rows. WEATHER AND DWR CANCELLATION POLICY: Safety is DWR's top priority. Rows are weather dependent. DWR will go out in a variety of weather conditions, including light to moderate wind, some chop or swell, fog, rain and snow. DWR's client cancellation policy applies--please review. Look forward to rowing with you!
